I fell in love with Mumbai. Head over heels. It was the family holiday feeling around the Gateway of India, the giant balloons, the ice-cream wallahs, the charmingly stern portraits followed by laughter. It was the bewitching combination of old and new, of sleekly fashionable and beautifully traditional, of modern-day professions and old-world trades. It was finding architectural memories of Edinburgh in India. It was tasting the most divine chocolate brownies at Theobroma’s. It was the bird’s eye view of the Dhobi Ghat where a city’s washing was flapping in the breeze. It was eating kulfi from a carefully folded banana leaf walking down the beach. It was the train station. It was the footpaths, so rare in India, carrying our steps safely beyond the traffic. It was Mumbai.
